Spotlight On...

Antioxidants

In many ways antioxidants are like the super heroes of the skin care world. They kick (neutralize) free radical ass, those wrinkle-causing bad guys produced by sunlight, stress, air pollution and other environmental factors. Think of what a cut apple looks like after being left out for a few minutes.

Antioxidants act like a squeeze of lemon juice.

If you think that 90% of ageing is caused by Antioxidants you get the gist of their importance.

They are heralded in the industry for both their preventative and reparative powers. We are encouraged to slather them on both our skin and salads. The ultimate skin food.

Some researchers have even suggested that Antioxidant-based products are more important than SPFs in fighting ageing and cancer. Vitamins A, C and E are earning their stripes as the skin care big guns.

While there’s no shortage of research and results illustrating the benefits of Antioxidants the issue is more problematic than it seems. Scientists are arguing that for Antioxidants oxygen is their kryptonite. According to some the moment you open your jar of moisturiser or pump your cleanser and the product comes into contact with air the potency of the ingredients are lost.

Revolutionary new skincare range Radical also argue that multiple Antioxidants are required to fight the numerous types of free radicals. According to them there are five types of Free Radicals and using the one or two Antioxidants present in most products is simply not enough. Furthermore, they claim that when Antioxidants are combined with reparative ingredients in skincare they break down and lose their power, rendering them mere humans when it comes to protecting your skin from Free radical assault. Radical have pioneered a new technology named Trylacel™ which effectively encapsulates the Antioxidants preserving their potency. Radical products are jam packed with 15 Antioxidants. Their hero Peptide Infused Antioxidant Serum was tested by a USDA lab and was proven to be 300% more potent in antioxidant protection than leading brands. Its effects on sun damage certainly make it worthy of a cape and a sidekick. However, the moisturizers are in jars- not exactly air tight (they say that the Trylacel protects the antioxidants so they don't need air tight packaging).

For the time being all of this is still speculation. The exact details are still being argued out by the masterminds (scientists). In the mean-time by all means carrying on using your products but don’t put your skin’s life in the hands of these creams. Be skin care savvy. A very common myth skincare companies have spread is that Retin-A makes skin more susceptible to sunlight. The truth is Retin-A degrades in the sun- making the product ineffective. That is why they are not recommended for daytime use.

Companies would have to jump many a hurdle to rebrand their products into airless packaging- watch out and applaud the ones who do. Don’t give up on proper sun care; it is your best hope for long reigning happy skin. And remember, beauty does come from within- even if their effectiveness in skincare is being questioned antioxidants are still essential – satisfy your snack attack and keep your skin healthy in one, eat them.

And if you can afford the purse crippling prices give Radical products a go they are Ah-mazing.

Say hello to....

Spotlight on Nude
(and giveaway make sure to check the bottom!)

'You are more beautiful NUDE'

I recently had the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the natural, high-performance skincare range Nude. It was founded in 1998 by Bryan Meehan and Hass Hassan. They aimed to create a skin care line that would do for skin what organic food had done for diets, in fact Meehan had previously launched organic food emporium Fresh and Wild.

Whilst now the distinctions between natural and hi-tech brands are a lot more blurred, with naturals harnessing the power of science and vice versa, back in the nineties people didn't believe that natural and organic beauty products could pack enough of a skincare punch to tackle their concerns.

Enter Nude.

Meehan and Haasan wanted to create a credible alternative to the big shots sans the chemical cocktail. They combined their experience with organic food with extensive research into what the skin needs. Their range hinges on the basis that whilst synthetics stay on top of our skin natural elements are absorbed.

Nude skin care revolves around one key ingredient. The n-probiotic. n-probiotic works at the heart of cells to stimulate celluar energy and trigger the skin to produce its own anti-ageing ingredients. Within 24 hours, skin starts producing its own natural anti-ageing ingredients, the ones that occur in abundance when we are younger but start to struggle as we age; collagen, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants. This means the body is able to determine what ingredient it needs the most. Instead of forcing your skin to absorb something it does not want or need Nude products stimulates your skin to assess the internal situation and react accordingly. Effectively forcing your body to act as it's own diagnostic and chemist. Genius right? This means that you are creating changes from the inside out, and the changes won't suddenly stop the moment you stop using the product. As we could all do with an extra boost of something, especially if you live in pollution infested London, there is a Nude product for everyone!

The other innovative component to Nude technologies is the use of omega oils. Omega oils are essential for skin health, yet we as a country do not eat enough of them. No eating salmon once a blue moon will not do the trick! Your body likes to prioritize. If you are only giving yourself a small intake the benefits will go to your vital organs first and your skin last.  Omega oils work to nourish the whole skin cell, supporting the skin's natural defences and protecting the cells from ageing stress. Think greater concentration, clearer skin, stronger nails and longer hair. Seriously who does not dream of that. Whilst fish oils are a great way of getting your omegas for those who don't like the taste let your skin do the eating instead.

Using 10 different 100% pure and active plant oils Nude skincare contains 4 different omegas.
3- Redness and Irritation
6- Moisturizes and hydrates
7- Renews and Repairs
9- Protects and nourishes.

Nude has 4 different ranges which use specific omegas, carefully selected to treat a particular skin type.

Radiant- for normal skin contains omega 6
Replenish- for dry skin contains omega 6 & 9
Purify- for oily and combination skin contains omega 3
Whilst the advanced anti ageing (think 45+) Cellular Renewal- contains omega 6 & 9 plus cellular renewal technology (to boost cell renewal)

The ranges cult product ProGenius contains all 4 omega oils working as a botanical buffet for your skin.

In addition the range consists of; the cellular renewal serum, perfect cleansing oil, purify cleansing wash, purify toning water, miracle mask and perfect polish.

The whole range consists of the n-probiotic except the oils (as it needs water)

Nude is gluten free and suitable for vegans. All packaging can be recycled. And all products are beautiful without parabens, sulphates, synthetic fragrance, mineral oil or silicones.

In a nut shell. Nude uses ingredients which are produced within your skin and precisely suited to your skin, so effects will be more targeted, long lasting, and there will be less risk of irritation.

Check back for a review of two of my favourite Nude products ProGenius and Miracle Mask.

Beauty Uncovered

GLOSSY GLOSSARY

Demystifying the beauty industry one word at a time

Beauty buzz words tend to get bandied around on product descriptions rather haphazardly. Brands claim to have discovered and harnessed xyz miracle technologies but do you actually know what they mean?

Hopefully this post will help you learn the ABCs of beauty and keep you top of the class.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs): These are exfoliating acids that can be derived naturally, mostly from fruit and milk, or created synthetically. They are the more sophisticated older sister of traditional exfoliators, where you can tangibly feel the beads or particles.  AHAs make your skin softer and smoother, removing dead skin cells without the harsh scrubbing often associated with exfoliating. They are also known to treat fine lines and wrinkles as well as lightening dark spots on your skin. They can be found everywhere from cleansers to serums to moisturizers. One of the most commonly used AHAs in Glycolic Acid. Professionals claim that products need to contain at least 10% of the acid to be effective.

Good For: Anti ageing benefits, acne, and getting rid of lack lustre skin.

Best on the Market: Acne Treatment Pads from Cane and Austin £48. Can be purchased at Space NK

AHAs can cause sun sensitivity so make sure to layer up the sunscreen!

Antioxidants: Antioxidants fight against free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that occur naturally when the body uses oxygen, but can damage skin at a cellular level, speeding up the aging process. Free radicals can also come from exposure to sun, smoke, and stress. The most common antioxidants used are Vitamin A, E and C, and their purpose is to enhance the immune system and improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Antioxidants can also be found in food generally the brighter the food the more powerful the antioxidant.

Good For: Everyone! The most important step in skincare is prevention!

Best on The Market: Blueberry Water Booster, Dr Brandt, £30 (Currently on sale in Space NK for £15!)

Beta hydroxy acids: BHAs generally refers to salicylic acid. If you’ve oily or blemish prone skin, salicylic acid is the one for you. It’s an exfoliating agent with a smaller molecule size than alpha hydroxys, making it perfect for getting right into pores and clearing them out.

Good For: Clearing out blocked pores and saying ca la vie to white heads and black heads

Best on The Market: Biore, Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser, £4.99

Collagen: A type of protein that’s essential for plumped up skin, healthy hair and strong nails.   It’s created naturally in the body but we can supplement our natural reserves by applying it topically in our skincare or by taking it in supplements. Collagen is not just a concern for the older ladies it is vital for keeping our locks luscious. If you are trying, and struggling, to grow your hair give some extra collagen a try!

Good For: Anti ageing and promoting healthy hair and strong nails

Best on the Market: Schwarzkopf Extra Care Hair Repair Line, prices vary

Hyaluronic Acid: Is the IT ingredient of the moment. It occurs naturally in the body and helps retain moisture in the skin. It attracts water, making it great at hydrating the skin, but more importantly it can plump the skin and soften wrinkles.

Good For: Anti Ageing and blurring imperfections

Best on the Market: My own personal Holy Grail, By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder £41. From Space NK

Keratin: Keratin is a protein found naturally in your hair. It can fill in gaps in the hair cuticle that are cracked, dry, or damaged.

Good For: Repairing dry or damaged hair

Best on the Market: Keratese, Elixir Ultime £34.50. From most Salons

Parabens: Are chemical preservatives that extend the lifespan of your products. The jurys out on whether or not they are a good or bad thing, but if you are someone who doesn't wear makeup that often and finds that your products last you ages a preservative to make them last longer is most probably a good thing!

Retinoids: Retinol is vitamin A an anti-aging ingredient that has been clinically proven to work against wrinkles, skin discolouration and acne. Check the dosage on products before you buy, you need quite a high percentage for it to be most effective, and creams take on average 12 weeks to work before you'll see results.

Good For: Acne or Wrinkles

Best on the Market: Philosophy, Help Me, £38. From select Boots, Harrods and Selfridges

UVA: UVA rays are constantly present, no matter the weather. so if you think you can't get sun damage in Britain think again. UVA rays are responsible for the signs of aging because they are able to penetrate much deeper into the surface of the skin, damaging the cells beneath. Think sun spots, leathery skin and and wrinkles.
UVB: UVB Rays are the ones responsible for sunburn. Unlike UVA rays, these aren't always the same strength year round, they are at there strongest in the summer months. UVB rays are responsible for causing most skin cancers.
Best Protection: Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30 £24
Make sure to apply SPF every day every season, it should be one of the most important steps in your skin care routine, remember prevention is the name of the game!
