Back to Basics

My Five Minute Face

I love to have an overflowing makeup bag. I have even been known to get all my products out just to stare at their beauty! Nonetheless most of us reach for the same products time and time again, I know I do! In these next few posts I will review my five favourite products that I use over and over again. What are yours?

Step 1

I am a firm believer in it's what's underneath that counts, what's underneath the layers of war paint that is!

Foundation is the most important step in your makeup routine it can make or break the rest of your look. A good foundation should hide your flaws and accentuate your natural beauty (cheesy but true), that means your skin should still shine through or you will look cakey and fakey!

I have tried all sorts of foundations over the years and I have finally found my holy grail.

Kevyn Aucoin's Sensual Skin Enhancer is a little jar of wonder.

They Say: A multi-tasking formula for creating a gorgeous, flawless complexion. The Sensual Skin Enhancer was created to mimic the appearance of healthy, radiant skin. It can be used as a foundation, concealer, all-over foundation, highlighter or mixed with your moisturiser for a tinted moisturiser effect. No matter how you wear it The Sensual SKin Enhancer leaves the complexion with a fresh flawless finish.

I Say: The opportunities are endless with this product it is the epitome of versatility. It can be whatever you want it to be.

The product comes in a lip gloss sized pot, you only get 18g for £36 so it might not sound like a lot of bang for your buck but it is definitely worthy the splurge!

I tend to use the product primarily as a foundation, although when wearing it it negates the need for a concealer anyway! The texture is very thick and creamy and seriously the TINIEST amount goes the longest way, think the size of a pea for your whole face!

One slight niggle I have with the product is that as it comes in a pot application is not the most hygienic, how many of you really wash your hands before applying makeup?! I tend to dip the nub of my makeup brush into the pot, swipe the product onto my hand, mix in some moisturizer and buffer onto my skin.

The product gives as sheer or full a coverage as you want.  If you like, or need, a really heavy duty foundation you can forgo the moisturizer and use the product alone. I personally prefer a more natural look and mixing the product with a moisturizer gives that your skin but 100x better effect.

The foundation doesn't set into fine lines or pores, it doesn't oxidize and change colour half way through the day, and its staying power is around 8 hours (with setting powder). It is thick and creamy so would be perfect for dry or normal skin. My skin is incredibly oily and this foundation still works perfectly on me, so I definitely think it would suit most skin types. It applies quite dewy, so if you like that look simply move on to the next stage, if not brush on some powder for a more matte effect.

It might sound extortionately expensive, which is probably is, but the teeny tiny pot is meant to last 5 years! It is great for throwing in your bag for touch ups throughout the day, as it's not as clunky as other foundations.

Here is me using the foundation alone, without a moisturizer  as you can see it is very pigmented. In the last picture i have foundation on the right side of my face and nothing on the left.

I tend to mix my foundation in with my moisturizer, I have applied it like this on the left side of my face, you can see it gives a more natural looking effect.

If you are looking for a new foundation and don't mind splashing the cash check this little beauty out at Space NK
